In 1892 Texas, the Black Army deserter Elijah Jones has apparently kidnapped Rachel Kidd, a genteel wife from a wealthy Eastern family. They travel to Mexico and await a ransom to be paid for her release. Her husband Martin hires legendary bounty hunter Max Borlund (Christoph Waltz) to find them and bring them back to Texas.
