Regarded as a landmark album in American music, Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music Volumes has been listed among the greatest albums of all time by Blender, Rolling Stone and Time magazines. In the process of recording the album, Ray became one of the first African-American musicians to exercise complete artistic control over his own career. The album spawned four chart-topping singles: ‘Born To Lose’, ‘Careless Love’, ‘You Don't Know Me’ and ‘I Can't Stop Loving You’, the latter (and the album itself) being RIAA-certified Gold only a month after release. The album has been unavailable in any format since 2012. It was recorded in February 1962 at Capitol Studios in New York City and United Studios It features alto sax great Hank Crawford, with strings arranged by Marty Paich, horns by Gil Fuller and Gerald Wilson.
